Easy Small Business Networking Tips

Small business networking can become second nature and easy to do if you follow these simple tips. They are easy ideas to remember and implement not only in your home based business environment but also in your personal life as well.

You will use these techniques quite easily once you get used to them. When you learn how small business networking is done you will be able to increase your home based business influence and revenue.

Some Networking Tips:

* Set Objectives

* Use Business Cards

* Take Notes

* Be Yourself

* Help Each Other

* Stay in Contact

* Grow the Relationship

Set Objectives

Before attending a small business networking event such as the chamber of commerce meeting or trade show set clear objectives. Is your objective to get a new supplier, an employee, more funding or to sell your products or services? Are you looking for a qualified professional to work with?

Write these objectives down so that you will be able to focus on what your most wanted outcome is. Some questions that I ask before an event are: Who do I want to meet? Why do I want to meet them? Will there be enough of these people at the event?

With your objectives in mind you will be able to make the best use of your time while you are attending the event. You will know the people you want to meet and be able to start building a strong relationship.

After the first event, you can continue to use this objective planning strategy to find events that will allow you to meet more of your desired small business networking contacts.

Use Business Cards

A simple small business networking tool is to carry business cards with you at all times. Whether or not you are attending an event, you should never leave your home based business without them.

There are always excellent opportunities to hand out your business card and it is such an easy and inexpensive way to market your home based business. People are always receptive to your business card when it is given in the right atmosphere.

Take Notes

It is very important to remember the people you meet and the conversations that transpired. I take mental notes but as soon as I get a chance I write them down on a notepad that I carry with me. If the person handed you a business card you can jot down some of the notes there first. Then transpose them to your PDA, Business Planner, Notebook or Computer Database.

Taking notes will help you remember your conversations and have information available when you follow up. Get as much information as possible about personal and business information such as birthdays, anniversaries, business interests and hobbies.

All of this information will help you to build strong relationships with people. It will also show them that you were paying attention to the conversation. Check out my article; What did You Say? – Ways to Create Effective Listening Skills for some great information that will help you with your small business networking skills.

Be Yourself

In small business networking your attitude and persona can have a huge impact on how effective you efforts will be. Be sincere and keep the conversation at a low pitch by not trying to oversell your products or services. Remember, they don’t know you yet!

As you continue build your relationship you will be able to find the win-win situation that I talk about in my article; Enhance Your Business Communication Skills.

Once you have a strong relationship you will be in a better position to ask for their help or to be able to offer your help in their business.

Help Each Other

Once you have started a relationship with people listen to their needs. Is there something that you can offer to help them with? There may be a person that you know that you could introduce them to. What about sharing home based business resources such as an attorney or marketing firm?

Small business networking begins with you offering your help, then others are more receptive to giving you their help.

Stay in Contact

Once you have met a business contact it is important to follow up and stay in contact with them. Follow up is the back bone of building a strong small business network. Try to stay in contact as soon as possible after meeting them. The next day would be the best since you are still fresh in their minds.

There are various ways to stay in contact and follow up. Some people may prefer the e-mail approach while a simple phone call may be more effective. You usually don’t have to say more then; “Hi, it was nice to meet you yesterday”. If they had offered a referral thank them (of course after you spoke to the referral).

This might be a good time to send them the information you had spoken about, possibly send them a link to a news article or product that you may have talked about. Also if you had referred them to someone or suggested something you should always follow up so that they will know that you care and are interested in them.

Grow the Relationship

This is the simplest and most fun part small business networking. It will be up to you to continue to contact and grow the relationship. Business networks will thrive if you continue to foster the relationship. Some easy ways could be an invitation to breakfast, lunch, dinner, events or special occasions. A quick phone call or e-mail that has relevance to the relationship can work wonders.

When you stay in contact by reaching out to maintain and grow a relationship, the other person will realize just how sincere and valuable your relationship with them is.

Final Thought:

Small business networking is invaluable to your home based business success. You will find great long term relationships that will keep expanding. A great network is one that is alive and growing daily. These networking tips can be for personal and professional use. Just remember that it is up to you to foster the relationships.

Blogging For SEO: How To Get Maximum Search Benefit From Your Small Business Blog

If you have a small business blog, or are thinking of starting one, you should be aware of the ways you can use your blog to drive traffic to your Website. It’s simpler than you think.

The first thing to understand about your blog is that each entry is counted as one Web page. Even if you have your blog set to display 10 blog posts on the same page, each of them is counted as a separate Web page by the search engines. That’s why it is important to treat each blog entry as an SEO tool. The following tips should be kept in mind for each blog entry in order to optimize them for the search engines and drive more traffic to your Website from your blog:

1. Optimize each blog post around a single keyword
2. Make sure your keyword is in your blog post title, preferably at the beginning
3. Use subheads with or tags that also use your keyword
4. Include 1-3 keyword links (anchor text) in your blog posts
5. Sign every blog post with a signature link that uses your keyword
6. Use bold and italics effectively to emphasize certain keywords and phrases
7. Be sure to ping the directories
8. Include tags for all of your blog entries
9. Use categories effectively
10. Make links appear natural by linking to internal pages of your Website

Because each blog entry is a separate Web page, the search engines will crawl them and index them just as they do your Web pages. Optimize each one heavily around a specific keyword related to your Website and that’s an extra doorway into your Website for each page indexed at the search engines. Also, by adding anchor text to a couple of those keywords and pointing those links to relevant internal Web pages of your Website you are improving the SEO effect of your blog entry. A poll of top SEO experts by SEOmoz revealed that a majority of those SEO experts said these type of keyword links are among the top 10 most important SEO factors for ranking Web pages. Don’t give up on keywords and anchor text.

You’ll also want to include keyword tags with each blog entry. Those tags will be used by the search engines to index your pages appropriately for your keywords. Also, social bookmarkers will find it easier to tag your blog entry if they like it and this makes it easier to share among their social group.

Your blog category should indicate an important element of interest as well. Unlike tags, you should only choose one category for each blog post. Don’t use “main” or “uncategorized.” Those are too generic. Use a specific keyword-related category as that will make your blog posts more crawlable by the search engines.

There are more than 100 blog directories that you can ping to let them know you have updated your blog. I suggest you do this every time you update your blog. With WordPress, and several other blogging software platforms, you can input each directory into a field and the software will send out an automatic ping each time you update your blog. If you are not using WordPress you should go to Ping-o-Matic and use it to ping your blog for free.

Finally, if you sign your blog posts with a keyword-rich signature that points to a relevant internal page of your Website, this will make your Website more crawlable and give you another anchor text link. Use something like, “Find Out More About Keyword.” Then add another link that points to your home page.

The important thing to remember about keywords and links, whether on your blog or your Website, is to make them appear natural. The benefits are enormous.

Website Search Engine Optimization Tips For Your Small Business Website

If you have a website of your own for your small business first of all congratulations. Many of you competitors do not have one yet. You have a leg up on them. For those that do have their own website they may not have it optimized for the maximum results from the search engines.

Here are a few ways you can get a leg up on them with proper search engine optimization for your small business website.

1. Duplicate Content: As a general rule keep all of the content on your website fresh and original. Don’t use someone else’s content unless you have paid for it and it is 100% yours to copyright.

2. Links: Outgoing links are bad. Incoming links are good. Internal linking to other pages within your site are good. Use hyperlinked keyword phrases to tell the search engines and your visitors what the page is about.

3. Keyword Density: Keep you keyword density at 2%-5% per page. This means that if you have an article of 400 words on the page don’t use your primary or secondary keyword phrases more than 20 times. Personally I think that is to much and would shoot for 8-10 times. More than that and it sounds like spamming and it probably is.

4. Title Tag: Keep you words to a minimum and include your primary kewyord and secondary keyword one time.

5. Description Tag. Keep your words to a minimum and include your primary and secondary keywords to describe what your web page is about

6. Keyword Tag. These do not serve much of a benefit from a search engine optimization standpoint, but it is o.k. to include 2 or 3 as they relate to your page.

7. Alt Text. Search engines can not read pictures, only words. So tell them again what your site is about by including your primary and secondary keywords followed by the word graphic or image.

8. Headline Tags. h1, h2, h3 followed by the keywords in order of importance. Then use those again one time in the body of the text following the headline tag.

9. Bold, underline and italicize your primary keyword one time in the first paragraph only. Use keyword variation throughout the page without any bolding, underlining or italicizing. Bold your primary keyword one more time in the last paragraph and finally again as the last word in the bottom of the page.

Search engine optimization for your small business website is really all about making it easy for a search engine to understand what your page is about. The easier you make it for them the better they will rank you for that keyword search.

Humor: an Integral Part of Growing a Small Business

I was recently reading a magazine and came across an article about involving humor in the workplace. My eyes naturally gravitated toward the article, as I am all about incorporating fun into my workday. As I read through the article, I started laughing out loud at how ridiculous it was (not the laugh the author was looking for).

The article was, for lack of better words, lame. His points were stiff, structured, and focused on when and how to use humor in the workplace. Some of the “laughable” tips include avoiding intellectual humor and practicing your joke, yet looking for ways to make it appear spontaneous. I don’t know about you, but I am not practicing the joke I am going to crack in a meeting the night before, and definitely am not practicing ways to make it seem impulsive.

I am privileged to work in a growing, small business that encourages team members to be themselves and bring their own sense of humor to the table, very unlike the article that I read. PaySimple created its core values into the PaySimple PATH (which stands for Passion, Authenticity, Teamwork, and Happiness) and the PATH always begins and ends with Fun! As a small business, our team members are constantly working hard for our clients and continuously striving to contribute to the success of our company. Humor brings us together and creates a more enjoyable work environment. When you are working hard 9 hours a day, who doesn’t want to occasionally break for a laugh?

Having fun and involving humor also builds relationships among team members. When your company is growing at a fast pace, and you are constantly adding new people into your culture, humor is a great icebreaker and effective communication tool. Additionally, the small business environment can be stressful, and humor can be a valuable tool to relieve that stress. Use it often to lighten the mood, especially if the person next to you is having a rough day and needs a little pick-me-up.

Appreciate working in a small business environment, as you have the power to energize and empower your employees by creating an enjoyable and open place for them to work. And laugh and have fun along the way!

How to Make a Great Classified Advertisement for a Small Business

Most home and small businesses rely on classified advertisements to market their services and products. Getting good results with a classified ad isn’t as simple as it seems. There is more to it than just writing two or three lines of copy and placing it in the local shopping digest or weekly newspaper. A well-written ad in the wrong publication or under a wrong headline or a poorly written ad in the right publication will not get you the desired results.

Follow the tips we’ve outlined below when you develop a classified advertisement for a small business:

o Choose the right publication: Target your customers and post the ad in publications that they are likely to read. For example, a classified advertisement for a small business that is into beauty therapy or pet grooming is likely to receive a better response when placed in journals favored by upper-class communities.

o Do your homework: Look at other samples of classified advertisements for a small business that appear in the local media consistently week after week. What is it about certain messages that catch your attention? What sets them apart? Is it the way they are worded or placed or did you perceive value in the benefit that is being promised? Analyze these ads and incorporate their best features into yours.

o Think through your content: Before writing out a classified advertisement for a small business, one must know exactly what it is one wants to sell. Make sure the communication is very clear and specific. Once you have determined your message, draft it out in one or more complete sentences. Then, prune it to make it concise and effective. Be sure to include a phone number or other contact information.

o Make the first few words count: The first couple of words in a classified advertisement for a small business are equivalent to a headline in a newspaper. They should arrest the readers’ attention immediately and make them want to go further. In order to do that, those words must tell readers the most important benefit of your product or service upfront.

o Proofread carefully: Proofread the copy for typographical and grammatical errors very carefully. Just because it is a classified advertisement for a small business, and not a full blown campaign featuring a big brand, does not mean it can be dealt with casually. A badly written piece will certainly harm your reputation and make your business look shoddy. If you have drafted the lines, it is better to have someone else proofread the final version.

o Look at where your competitors are: Advertise in the same publications favored by your competitors. Look through the back issues of any journal that you are considering advertising in. If your rivals have been advertising consistently in that publication, your message should be in there as well.

o Test your advertisement in several publications: Place your ad in different publications to test which ones work for you. Use the same body copy in all of them. Run each one long enough to give it a fair try. Having your business ad appear on a regular basis builds name recognition and convinces prospective customers to trust you.

Even though internet advertising is here to stay, old-fashioned print ads can still produce results as long as you use them effectively. Remember there are still thousands of people who have no access to the internet and who depend on local newspapers and yellow pages to find the products and services they need. A classified advertisement for a small business can help bridge this gap very nicely indeed. What’s more, it is a fairly inexpensive way for small businesses to market themselves.
